Experience

student learning piano

I bring to Music Foundations almost twenty years’ experience teaching ages 4 and up, from beginners to advanced. I teach many styles, from Classical to jazz, rock, and pop. I graduated from the prestigious Eastman School of Music with a Master’s degree in piano performance and literature in 1997, and started teaching piano lessons in Cary in 2001. Since moving to the Cary/Raleigh area I have added to my Classical credentials by spending three years studying jazz using the intense Lennie Tristano method. I have been published in Clavier Companion magazine.

Over the past 10 years the two biggest influences on my teaching have been Sheila Paige and the writings of Edwin Gordon. My work with Sheila Paige through dozens of workshops and hours of lessons has brought deep understanding of the physical playing mechanism. I use my knowledge of how to efficiently produce a beautiful tone in every lesson with every student. Dr. Gordon’s writings have brought to me great understanding of how students learn music, when they do learn. In August 2018 I plan to travel to Brookline, Massachusetts for a two-week course and certification from the Gordon Institute of Music Learning.

Along with my piano instructor duties, I maintain an active performing schedule. In recent years I have enjoyed collaborations with various members of the North Carolina Symphony, performing the chamber music of Mozart, Poulenc, and Dutilleux among others. I have been staff pianist at Genesis United Methodist Church in Cary for sixteen years. I was choral accompanist for the senior high choir at Cary Christian School from 2010-2015. I have also performed as orchestral pianist/keyboardist with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, the Raleigh Symphony, the Durham Symphony, and the North Carolina Opera. I can be heard on the North Carolina Symphony’s CD release, “American Spectrum,” performing with the symphony accompanying the quartet of world famous saxophonist Branford Marsalis. In 2010, I accompanied superstar violinist Joshua Bell in a private concert. In 2013, 2014, and 2016 I accompanied world famous pop-opera quartet il Divo in their Raleigh and Durham performances. In March 2014, I accompanied the Cary Christian School Chamber Choir performing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

In 2004, I released a CD of my own original compositions and arrangements entitled “Offering.”  During two CD release concerts, over $20,000 was raised for the Zimbabwe Orphans Endeavor (ZOE), benefiting HIV/AIDS orphans in Africa. Since then Music Foundations has championed other causes including rainforest conservationorphaned elephants and rhinos, and a local young musician battling cystic fibrosis.
